Pronouncement on Cuba
To the United Nations Secretary General
To the United Nations High Comissioner for Human Rights
To the Secretary General of the Organization of American States
To the President of the Inter-American Court of Civil Rights
To the Foreign Ministers of the countries of America
The American Chapter of the International Institute of Human Rights demands the cessation of state repression in Cuba. It is necesary, in this process, for the countries in the region to cooperate on rebuilding the social tissue; repairing violated human rights; international loans to support an economy that will be self-sufficient; the creation of rule of law with separation of powers, open politic participation, free elections and an unrestrictive freedom of speech and choice, among other actions the american continent must seriously boost.
The protection of Human Rights also demands attention to the food crisis and the unequal distribution of drugs that plagues the island. The unilateral blockade has proven not only ineffective, but also counterproductive. The bankruptcy of the Eastern countries that financed the island - added to the international isolation - has led to the gradual collapse of the State. This propelled society into an impressive popular movement demanding freedom and openness.
For this Institute, the defense of Human Rights and individual guarantees is the only way towards real progress.
